At BrandComix, we believe in the power of storytelling to create change. That’s why we’ve partnered with MLF to create “The Invisible Illness,” a comic book designed to raise awareness and drive donations to save this essential organization.
This is more than just a fundraiser—it’s a movement to help ensure no one battles lupus alone.
About “The Invisible Illness”
A Comic For Change
This original comic book tells the story of a young mother living with lupus, showcasing the reality of invisible illness—how it affects daily life, how hard it is to get diagnosed, and why community support is so essential.
The book will be distributed in May (Lupus Awareness Month) to help raise awareness nationwide and serve as an ongoing tool for education and advocacy.

Why This Cause Matters To Us

This project didn’t just come to us—it found us, like fate.
Watching someone you love battle an illness that no one else can see is heartbreaking. The constant fatigue, pain, and frustration of feeling dismissed by doctors—these are everyday realities for so many. That’s why this story had to be told. My wife’s journey inspired this book, but it represents millions who face lupus daily. Last year, my wife Brittni attended a Michigan Lupus Foundation event, where she met Kimberly Dimond, the foundation’s Executive Director. Fast-forward to now—at Comix Wellspring, we had just begun developing BrandComix, testing how comics can drive real impact in advocacy and nonprofit fundraising. Then, in February, Brittni mentioned something that stopped me in my tracks: The Michigan Lupus Foundation was about to shut down. As we talked, she brought up an idea: What if we made a comic book to help them? The moment felt too aligned to ignore. I met with Kimberly, and I could see the passion and urgency in her voice. This foundation isn’t just another nonprofit—it’s a lifeline for many people battling lupus in Michigan. With my connection to the daily, unseen struggles of lupus and our mission at BrandComix to test the power of comics for cause-driven campaigns, this felt like something we had to do. Now, with The Invisible Illness, we have a chance to help save this critical organization and prove that comics can be a game-changer in advocacy, awareness, and fundraising. This is more than a campaign, it’s a movement. And we need you to be part of it. Dan Hills CEO, Comix Wellspring

“The Invisible Illness” is a powerful, purpose-driven comic designed to raise awareness about lupus, an invisible autoimmune disease that affects millions. This project is part of an urgent fundraising campaign to help the Michigan Lupus Foundation continue its vital work supporting lupus patients across the state.
The comic book's story brings the often unseen battle of living with lupus to life. Told through the perspective of a young mother of two, the story follows her journey from confusion and isolation to diagnosis, support, and advocacy.
Art Prompt: Bring The Invisible Battle To Life
Lupus is often called the invisible illness because those living with it may look fine on the outside while battling pain, fatigue, and uncertainty within.
For this campaign, we encourage artists to interpret this concept in their own unique way—whether it’s through a comic book cover, portrait, symbolic imagery, abstract representation, or other storytelling illustration.
The Theme:
"What the world sees vs. what’s really happening inside."
-
A person looking strong and composed on the outside but revealing the internal struggle within.
-
Symbolic visuals like butterflies (a symbol of lupus), light vs. shadow, or energy depletion.
-
Abstract or surreal art that captures the emotional toll of living with lupus.
Artists can explore this concept in any style or medium that speaks to them. Whether you work in digital, traditional, comic book, or painterly styles, your interpretation will help tell a powerful story.
Your art could be used as a variant cover, an exclusive print, or a featured illustration for the campaign.
-
